According to official sources, Death will leave on vacation next week. The exact dates of her holiday period are unknown, but people close to her have stated that she will surely take a sabbatical year.

Death has decided to leave everything and retire to rest. For more than eight hundred years she had not let go of the scythe and disappeared for a while, relaxing who knows where. So the dreaded being leaves us for a season.

Many assure that her work had increased a lot during the last centuries and that, to continue at that rate, it would not take long to suffer terrible consequences. That is why, taking into account her own health, both physical and mental, Death has decided to leave the field until further notice.

The debate about the new horizon that has been drawn before us is already open, and the first reactions have flooded the social networks. This time, two factions have faced each other harshly. Those who have celebrated the news of Death's rest have been attacked by those who say that when she returns she will do so with vehemence.

The historical data speak for itself, and if we analyze it objectively we can observe how the “Parca” balances her work like nobody else. The last time she returned from one of her few retreats, she decided to compensate for her absence with one of the most terrible genocides lived by humanity. They say she was absent more than five years. It is still unknown where she went during that time, but nevertheless we all remember her return to work. History books depict how the Reaper scattered the seeds awaiting her greatest harvest. A sowing that spread throughout old Europe, and that bloomed swiftly and sweepingly in what we know today as the Black Plague.

On that occasion she ended the lives of a third of the population. All the European inhabitants of that era faced Death face to face in one way or another. No one escaped her actions. Those who survived suffered the devastating consequences of such a blunt blow and the aftermath dragged on for decades.

The most optimistic suggest that this time may be different. “Could this be her last retreat?” It was read yesterday in the New York Times. Many others support the theory that says the Stinker could have left for good, but then what would become of us? Would humanity live the worst of its punishments?

It is not the first time that simulations are made about the supposed disappearance of the Reaper. The results are always hopeless, although it can not be denied that in the short term the scenario would be very encouraging for many people.

How long would we be happy in that immortal world?

No one is able to answer that question, but what no one can argue is the fact that we would soon tear out each other's eyes for a piece of bread or a bowl of water. Maybe half a century later, a couple of decades, five years, or maybe just a couple of years, who knows.

There is no doubt that the constant work of our dreaded “Catrina” is the essential piece that balances life. And as paradoxical as it may sound, without it life would have no meaning. We long for that which has an end, we live intensely what we know will not be there forever. Without fear of dying, what would move us to go out running with open arms and the sea breeze licking our faces? Maybe we would do it in the first years, but then what?

Personally, I sincerely hope that the skinny beauty returns, that she takes her time, but that she comes back. Without the buzz of her scythe above our heads we would be more lost than ever.
