Money and Social Networks are synonymous with idolatry, and Steemit combines both. Are we facing the next step in the evolution of digital idolatry?
When talking about idols, perhaps anthropomorphic sculptures of gold and silver, flying clay snakes or feathered wooden birds, miraculous saints and virgins crying blood may come to mind; each and every one of those symbols that, according to the religion that is practiced, replace God in the chain of worship. However, in humanistic terms, we can speak of idolatry, as the excessive worship of things constructed by human beings which serve for their own alienation.
The modern world has given life to new forms of idols and idolatries, which includes not only the worship of political leaders or celebrities, but also states, nations, flags or currencies. A racist is, for example, a "collective idolater", since he presumes to belong to a privileged and superior "race". In philosophical terms, God could also be an idol for some, and religion, a kind of group narcissism.
Narcissism, which can be understood as "self-idolatry", is an enemy of humanism, since it violates the fundamental law that collectivity and fraternity are the basic pillars of a society. A narcissist does not listen, and when he talks, writes or builds, he thinks he has done something exceptional even if the reality is very different.
The narcissist is a person in love with itself, needs attention, compliments and, therefore, frequently changes profile images on Facebook and Twitter. Constantly post pictures of the dishes he/she eats and the places he/she visits. Narcissists love selfies because they consider that their physique is attractive in any situation of daily life.
WAIT! Then we are ALL narcissists?
There are countless psychological studies on narcissism in traditional (centralized) social networks such as Facebook, which looks more like an egoteque than a community of friends, but we are interested in talking about Steemit, a young platform that is shaping up to be the new model of Social Network in the world.
For Eric Fromm, a psychologist and humanist philosopher, scientific thinking is an antidote to idolatry, since the scientific method requires objectivity and realism; it implies observing the world as it is and getting rid of one's own desire and prejudice. It is also an antidote to education, which should stand out among all the achievements of humanity, and not of nations, since it leads people to feel more proud of themselves. Solidarity, love for neighbors and tolerance are other ways of overcoming idolatry in humanism.
What differentiates Steemit from previous Social Networks?
Steem is an algorithm that forces you to behave well
If money, in a society based on consumption and accumulation, is the most important idol that exists, and social networks, the more characteristic self-idolatry expresion of the digital era then, what role does Steemit play, proclaimed by all of us the new alternative of the internet?
We can not predict the future of Steemit, perhaps consumerism reaches such an extreme, that people will be willing to pay others to see what they eat, read what they do or listen to what they are thinking, however simple it may be. What we can assure you, is that currently NO ONE in Steemit is willing to accept that some are enriched with bad content; Traditional media made us allergic to stupidity.
Any person experienced in Steemit will recommend a fish: "the most important thing is to create a community". Any whale will tell a dolphin: "You must study hard and teach what you learn to fish." Any expert on the platform will tell another: "Be tolerant, otherwise you'll win more flags than friends at sea." Science, education, solidarity, love and tolerance, those pillars that according to the humanists, are antidotes to idolatry seem to be the ingredients that give life to the social logic of Steemit.
Do you want haters in Steemit?
-Behave like you do on Facebook
We are for the first time in history, before a social network, which although based on monetization through interaction, promotes fraternity as a means of collective subsistence and in response to individualism outside of the crypto world.
Steemit is also a moral prototype, a mathematical truth, something more than a communication network; we are without a doubt, before the most important attempt of humanity to take from the eternal accumulators of the riches and the truths, the economic and intellectual power.
