Cervantes Magazine Number 20: Criptomovies and Criptoseries

[Cervantes Magazine – Number 20]

Instinct as a concept is not an element widely used in film and television, but it is a parameter that does explain many of the attitudes of the protagonists in the plots of many productions, the instinct of survival, the maternal / paternal instinct, the killer instinct, in short ... instinct serves to justify or support the irrational behavior created by the people behind many productions.

As in this platform we only enjoy the company of people with a certain intellectual capacity, the necessary to have reached Steemit ... I will not define what we all know. We know what we are talking about when we say the word Instinct. Some will picture a little human being looking for a nipple desperately every time you have it in your arms near the chest, others will think of the action that makes you protect certain organs when, suddenly, you feel attacked, others simply will think about the recent falling of Bitcoin, and instinctively, something inside you pushes you to sell as quickly as possible. You are all right, instincts are something we live with every day and depending on people, some have it more exacerbated than others.

Cinema and television, as we have already commented on a previous occasion, drink from the sources of human feeling to create attractive stories for the viewer. Sometimes it tells us things that, although we have thought of realizing sometimes, we have known how to stop those instincts and behave as civilized people. However, if we were guided by instinct only, this would be chaos, the law of the strongest. We are animals, rational animals, but animals, who still preserve certain instincts from our wildest times, which “unconsciously" help us against certain threats. In daily life we try not to be guided by our instincts alone, but film and television are fiction and as such, they don’t have to respect that premise. The instinct for survival, the instinct of protection and other instincts have been exploited since the beginning of the history of cinema. Who has not empathized with a father whos son has been kidnapped, and so he undertakes a desperate search that ends with a massacre towards the authors of his anxiety ... in those films the instinct of protection towards your progeny and the murderous instinct are being exploited.

When we put ourselves in the mind of the protagonist we can justify any outrage since our instinct is telling us that, we would probably try to act in a similar way.

We have some examples of more brazen use of the term to justify certain attitudes, the clearest could be Basic Instinct. A thriller in which we are given to understand that the protagonist uses one of the most basic instincts, sex, to exterminate "macho men" in an excitingly bloody way during copulation.

We have other films that place their protagonists in certain circumstances in which instincts are again the dominators of the psyche and where the law of the strongest, or the smartest, or the luckiest, takes the lead. The instinct of survival is our main instinct, and the rest derive from there for the sole purpose of surviving and perpetuating the species through procreation. The Lord of the Flies puts us in front of a situation in which some children face survival and little by little, letting themselves be guided by their instincts, they become wild. A Highly recommended film, by the way.

If you look for films related to the theme of the week, the first one you come across with is “Instinct”. A Film starring the spectacular Anthony Hopkins that tell us the story of an anthropologist who enters a group of gorillas in the wild forests of Africa and who loses his human condition for a long period of time until he comes across with human beings that are going to hunt those gorillas, at which point he deploys a full range of instincts necessary to protect himself and his group / family. Then the film becomes another thing that keeps the attention and attractiveness, but it moves away more and more from the topic dealt with in this article. Don’t miss it if you want to know more about it.

In series section, currently one of the most followed and acclaimed, despite its erratic policy of not having a clear horizon or plott, is The Walking Dead. One of the clearest examples of argument based on the survival instinct and what the human being is capable of doing to prevail.

As in each issue, I encourage the followers of the Magazine to make a list of films whose main premise is the exploitation of the instincts. There are many, I know, but let's see if we can make a selection that is worthwhile to recommend to all our beloved community.
