[Cervantes Magazine - Number 16]

The Holidays are over and it is inevitable to feel nostalgic... That nostalgia, those memories, the typical post-New Year depression. New year, new goals, things to leave behind. Nostalgia and melancholy overwhelm us and we can't stop feeling this way until February (more or less)...What can we do?

According to the vague and specific definitions, nostalgia is "a feeling of sorrow for distance, absence, deprivation or loss of someone or something dear." Basically, nostalgia is a distant longing, a remembrance. In this week's edition, I will talk about how nostalgia and music are directly related.

For an artist, especially a musician, nostalgia is probably one of the most powerful sources of inspiration. The process is almost natural: songs generate nostalgia and nostalgia generate songs. Memory is a vital process to make art. That girl we saw on the street, that family member who is far away, that love that is no longer at your side ...

Music has always been a really important factor in the way we feel, since melodies and lyrics have the ability to transform us in just a 4 minute lapse. Personally, nostalgia has been one of the most intense sources of composition in my songs, as well as for many of the musicians I know. And we must also recognize that we are a bit sadomasochistic, since we love to hear sad music when we are feeling down.

And music has the invaluable ability to take us to places that only we know well. Music unconsciously always accompanies our life, that is why the series, movies, etc, are musicalized and certain melodies are used at certain times. That's why we should use music to our advantage. It doesn't matter, let yourself go. Immersing yourself in nostalgia is fine from time to time.

Remember when you were 15 years old and you listened to Linkin Park all day? What did you feel about the death of Chester Bennington? Remember the hype of Michael Jackson and your mother loving "Thriller"? Do you remember that concert on the roof by The Beatles and its unforgettable "Don’t let me Down"?

When talking about nostalgia, I'm an expert. As a (late) gift for Epiphany day I leave you a nostalgic playlist with which you can relive a lot of emotions and feelings. This playlist is composed of music that I usually listen to, plus songs than some of The Discord users of Cervantes have recommended (according to their points of view).

I hope you enjoy! Special thanks to @arcabuzx, @johannfrare, @salvao, @johelconh, @breathandmotion, @oswaldoyepezr, @gabriellecd, @aidnessanchez and @dorietmon for collaborating with some of the songs and bands that cause them the most nostalgia.
