Steemit next? Twitter rival Gab faces domain loss over extremist content

in #censorship7 years ago

It's not easy to host extremist right-wing content on the modern Internet. Gab, a small Twitter rival that bills itself as a bastion of free speech, has received word from its Australian domain registrar that it has five days to find a new registrar, or its domain will be canceled.

The story begins last month, when the neo-Nazi site the Daily Stormer got a similar message from its domain registrar, GoDaddy. The editor of the Daily Stormer had written an article mocking Heather Heyer, who died in protest-related violence in Charlottesville. The Daily Stormer wound up losing its domain name, and two key people associated with the site—editor Andrew Anglin and webmaster Andrew Auernheimer—switched to Gab as their primary way of communicating with the public.

Hosting Anglin and Aurenheimer—as well as other right-wing figures like Internet troll Milo Yiannopoulos—has created headaches for Gab. Days after Anglin became active on Gab, Google kicked Gab out of the Android app store, citing its lax moderation policies.

So if one person puts hate speech on your social networking sites then the whole site is shut down? That sure seems the be the case for Gab. Oh course all this is a bunch of shit because twitter and facebook are the kings of hosting hate speech with all the libtards and antifa punks calling for violence against Trump supporters.

However, Gab is fighting back with a lawsuit filed against Google for kicking them off the Android app store. I hope they win because it would be bad news for freedom lovers across the globe that respect people's right to free speech if they are shutdown.

Could Steemit be next?

I think if they are able to take Gab down it's only a matter of time before they come after Steemit and we're probably not going to have to wait long with who is hosting the domain.

Thats why it's important to have a decentralized app.
A site can be taken down any time.
Ethereum released a decentralized twitter called Leeroy, and it's probably the best place to move to for the time being.
In theory even Steemit has a decentralized dapp but there's no executable and requires high technical knowledge to get it running. I couldn't figure out how to get it working and i doubt most others would.
Steemit inc is in the US so they are protected by 1st Amendment but private globalist hosts such as Amazon might boycott the site if the see content they don't like.
I see the Steemit website becoming heavily censored in the near future, but a Steemit decentralized app could carry on with no censorship.

I don't see that happening for steemit. It's really odd how all of these monopolies like Facebook and Google and Twitter are so protected.

Amazon has been a bit better than Google. Still not hopeful.
