Internet Freedoms Decrease for the Sixth Year, 2 of 3 user under Govt. Surveillance: Freedom House Report.

in #censorship8 years ago

I woke up to an uncomfortable fact when I read the news today. As per a report published by Freedom House, a US based think tank which analyzes internet freedoms, every two out of three users on the Internet here in India is under some form of Government Surveillance!

This number is preposterous! Two thirds!

The report is based on a study of around 65 countries and India is included among them. Here in India we have the second largest base of internet in the world after China, having overcome the US lately, and it does not augur well for a nation which is basically getting its toe wet.

Despite technical and infrastructure problems, India has been moving steadily towards using the internet not only for entertainment and news, but also trade and commerce, and we have a profusion of new ideas in every sphere where the internet can be used.

But this surveillance shall work like a dampener and discourage most, if not reduced or curtailed completely. The recent withdrawal of high denomination of banknotes has caused a sudden surge of interest in Bitcoin and other crypto-currencies, and I feel this surveillance shall only increase the desire for anonymity on the net among the citizens of India.

This is the time I feel, technologies like the block-chain and cryptos has a higher chance to be adopted, and at a faster rate, if sites like steemit are advertised and promoted heavily, and I expect new users to join exponentially. I hope the leaders at steemit look into this and come up with a plan to promote steemit in India.

There is now a substantial amount of users from India here on steemit, and I for one am ready to volunteer my time, if the company comes forwards. India, with its huge English speaking population, would be an asset to the site and as the second largest base of people using the Internet, it would be attractive to new users who would sign up in a jiffy!
