Most people who are into agriculture or crop farming, appreciate the beauty and wonders of nature a great deal. The process of watching your seed grow from nursery to the main field up to harvesting, is a great feeling and something to always look forward to.
Today I will be talking on Plantain and Banana because I am having a plantain / banana plantaintion in a piece of land.
LAND PREPARATION
Plantain farming seem so easy to cultivate but you have to be careful of your choice of land- wether it is water logged or slopy, the soil type-loamy soil or sandy soil.
Plantain takes about 7- 9 months to maturity before it starts producing depending on the variety and the conditions if they are favourable. Like water during the dry season, fertilizer (organic) application and weeding the farm regularly or intercroping with a legume or vegetables like melon/ water melon.
We started by manually clearing the entire 3.5 plots of land and fell most of the trees before we planted. Some men were hired to do the job and in 3 days the land was ready for planting.
Cleared land
Few weeks after planting.
Some months later
Plantain is a major source of food in many regions of Nigeria. It can be sold locally in the markets ripe or unripe, professed to prduce plantain chips and plantain flour for sale or export. Fried ripe plantain is a delicacy with jolof rice, rice and stew or porage beans and some like it roasted known as bole in Nigeria.
Enjoy a plantain meal today.
