The word cocoa comes from the Aztec "cacahuatl". According to legend, cocoa was the most beautiful tree of the Aztecs' paradise, which attributed multiple virtues, quenching hunger and thirst, providing universal wisdom and curing diseases.

It is known that the first cocoa trees grow naturally in the shade of the rainforests in the Amazon and Orinoco basins, some 4000 years ago. The Mayans in a cultivate it more than 2500 years ago.

The origins of chocolate can be traced back to the ancient Mayan and Aztec civilizations of Central America. Known as Theobroma cacao, which means food of the gods, was appreciated for many centuries by the Mayan Indians of Central America. The first way to drink cocoa was to make a kind of spicy drink that is much appreciated, called chocolatl. This drink was made by roasting cocoa beans.

The Spanish were the first to bring cocoa to Europe in the sixteenth century. This event, which would change the history of so many future chocolate lovers, happened thanks to the Aztecs. But there was a fundamental problem, imported cocoa was very expensive, so only the rich could afford it. Chocolate was exclusively for drinking until the early Victorian era, when a technique for making solid chocolate on a tablet was devised.
