These birds are tropical and native to South America, which are characterized by having a huge peak of bright colors, in which it has small teeth that act as if they were a saw, but despite having a large size, it is usually very light. The toucan can measure between eighteen and sixty-three centimeters, and the toucan is the largest species.

The Ramphastidae better known as toucans, diotedé or diostedé, belongs to the family of very large ranphastid birds, because it houses six genera and forty-two types of different species of toucans, among which is the Amazonian tucan.

The toucans are distributed throughout the American continent, from Mexico, to Argentina. They usually prefer tropical lowland rain forests, but others like to live in forests with more temperate climates, or in mountain ranges, at altitudes of three thousand meters.

Its name comes from the Guaraní Tupí, tucana, which is a language with origins in Brazil

Feature of the toucan
These beautiful birds are characterized by having a very large beak, and very striking colors in their feathers. They can measure between eighteen and sixty-five centimeters long, and weigh from one hundred thirty to six hundred and eighty grams; although in appearance it is much bigger, those are its true measures.

So most people can recognize this bird, it is without a doubt, by its huge beak, which has an approximate length of twenty centimeters, and reaches its size that will be permanent after several months.

The toucan uses its beautiful beak to reach fruits that are in very small branches, and that would not support all their weight; and in addition to achieving them, it also serves to peel them. These animals as well as you see them as tender, also eat insects, and sometimes they can eat small birds, eggs, and even some lizards.

The toucan has an average life of twenty years, but in captivity, its life expectancy tends to decrease, since it is less than eighteen years, this is because these birds get sick of hemochromatosis, which is due to feeding with high content of iron, instead of fruit, which is an indispensable food for them.

These birds eat mainly fruits, because the toucan has a digestive system that is based on absorption, because what they consume, whatever it is, they discard in a few hours. Among all the fruits suggested to feed the toucan are apples, melon, peach, pear, kiwi, mango, banana, papaya, prickly pear and strawberries.

Extinction of the toucan

When you talk about extinction, you feel a void in your stomach and a pain in your heart, because this word means death and desolation, and it also means the end of a species so beautiful that it will never again exist on earth. The only way we will have to enjoy them will be through photos and documentaries, because live we will never appreciate them again.

These beautiful birds, which do not harm anyone, and which were created by God for the delight of the people, are themselves who are finishing not only their lives, but also the entire species.

Certainly the toucans in their natural habitat are exposed to many dangers because of their predators; having as natural enemies the big cats, snakes, jaguars, large owls, and eggs that are exposed to the attacks of vipers and snakes.

It is a shame that the main threat of this and many more species, always be man. It is human activities that have caused and continue to cause so much damage to toucans. It is estimated that about forty species of toucans are in danger of extinction, due to deforestation, which is the greatest threat in tropical forests.

Let's take care of the beautiful nature that God left us !!
