Despite efforts to reduce and recycle waste, Japan faces challenges with landfill capacity, which is diminishing even as the amount of landfill waste decreases. The country had over 1,600 landfills in 2018, with existing space expected to last another twenty years. Some regions struggle to find local landfill space and must transport waste to other areas.
