Understanding signals

in #cats8 years ago

Animals connect with humans on so many levels. It can be a gentle purr, headbutting, or even a meow. Aural signals only take up a very small part of how cats communicate, the larger part is through their body language.

Have you noticed how their tails react to stimuli?
Their tail is a big giveaway to their mood and sometimes it is difficult to discern the difference between the various positions of the tail.

Most of the time, an erect tail is a sign of affection and openness.
A swinging downwards pointing tail is closed and discomfort. This is the stance often seen before they attack their prey, or scratch something with their claws.

As confusing as cat's expressions can be, it takes time to understand them, each cat can respond differently and so there isn't a de-facto guide to what something means. Only you as an owner will understand. Constant observation, communication, and of course love is how to build that stronger connection which will foster a lifelong relationship full of mutual love.

Do you understand your cat?
