Interesting facts about cats pt.5!

in #cats6 years ago

Hello my cat lover friends! Today i'll be sharing with you another round of interesting facts you might not know about your cat!

In the last few days, my own family of cats have come under a little bit of tension. Two of my boys have gone into conflict and one seemingly ousted. It's been about a week since I've last seen him and obviously some work needs to be done to re-calibrate the social balance in my home. Just a quick update just in case you wondered where I've gone!

Here we are with today's interesting facts :

  • Cat fur grows and sheds on a cycle. It takes about 60 to 90 days for hair to grow fully, and then after a 40 to 60 day rest period, it falls out.

  • The shedding of fur is controlled by several factors. 1) Hormones, 2)Ambient temperature, 3)Light levels from outside or artificial.

  • Ever wondered how your cat can be so furry? Well that's because it has 60,000 hairs per square inch on the back, and double that amount (120,000) on the underside!

  • During colder weather, the cat is able to trap air by making their hair stand up. This is similar to how humans will use their hair to trap air and act as insulation. What's amazing is that this is completely subconscious and their fur has receptors at the end to sense the cold temperatures.

  • On the other end of the spectrum, cat's can tolerate temperatures up to 120 degrees F!

Fur is one of the defining characteristics of (most) cat's, so it's really good to know a few things or two about it!
