Why Do Cats Eat Grass?
My Cat Susie is Crazy About Eating Grass!
The first thing Susie does in the morning is go to the front door and wait for me to bring her some blades of grass. She will do this before she even eats her food. I have to admit I find it hysterical. She reminds me of a crack fiend that needs a hit.
Why Do Cats Eat Grass?
It does not matter whether your cat is an outdoor cat or an indoor cat. I have never seen a cat that did not like a little fresh grass salad in the yard. Grass is an irritant in the cats stomach which causes them to regurgitate all the nasty stuff in their stomach. This would be evolutionary behavior due to the foods they would eat in the wild. This would cause them to vomit up feathers and other material that is not easily digested.
Luckily my cat Susie eats a very clean diet of Purina Cat Chow and does not heave that often. Our other cat Patricio on the other hand will start heaving as soon as he eats the grass. Susie and Patricio are both rescues but Patricio was already a year old when he was rescued while Susie was a kitten. He is definitely a street thug minus his cajones. While she is much more sophisticated and a proper lady.
Health Benefits of Cats Eating Grass.
- Laxative
- High in Folic Acid which helps in the production of Hemoglobin.
- Helps Relieve Indigestion.
I grow 'cat grass' for our little felines. I bought the seeds online. However, I grew it in a pot near my chives and soon discovered that the cat was ignoring the specially cultivated 'cat grass' and nibbling on the chives instead. A cat with onion breath!
Oh my goodness, that is hysterical!
Thank you for sharing, but I must STRONGLY suggest you research the feline diet and stop feeding your cat commercial dry food (Purina, e.g.). Cats require a raw meat and bones diet; there are many resources online about this. One of the reasons your cat is eating grass like a fiend is because she is undernourished. She may still like grass, but her gut is - trust me - not healthy on Purina or other commercial food products. Look up BARF, it stands for Bones and Raw Food - for dogs and cats there are specific NATURAL diets. Cats, even more than dogs, need raw foods. Look at the ingredients in the bag of what is considered a 'good food'. It is not. What is the main ingredient? Corn? Flour? chicken 'by products'? These are NOT healthy foods for a cat. Please, I am glad your cat is healthy now, but for her long-term health please research. You may find it is less expensive. You will also find that the pet food manufacturers and most veterinarians (who make a lot of money selling commercial foods) will tell you not to feed your animals raw meat. They are simply wrong. Think about it ............
In the wild (and cats are not that long domesticated to have changed their gut), cats do not cook their food or eat tortillas or corn on the cob, or meat 'by products'. They eat the organs and muscle meat of small animals. You can replicate this. Chicken necks (always raw) are excellent for their teeth as well. I raised Abyssinians and they never had a problem with their teeth and their health was excellent on a diet of raw meat and bones. There is an excellent yahoogroup on this ... https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/rawpaws/info
Please, I love cats, and at every opportunity, yes, I do do this and recommend pet owners read up on natural alternatives to what the pet food industry is pushing as 'good food'.
May you and your kitties enjoy a long and healthy life together.
Thank you for the info!!
Yes I have noticed this too.
