Weird Cat Breed: The Teacup Persian
Technically, the Teacup Persian is a small-stature Persian cat under many names. The generic terms are "toy" and "teacup" Persians, but the individual lines are often called "palm-sized", "pocket", "mini" and "pixie". Currently, they are not recognized as a separate breed by major cat registries and each cat breeder sets their own standards for size.
These terms are considered controversial or marketing ploys as cats do not have the genetic mutations like dogs as cats have a strong genetic buffering mechanism that keeps the genes from mutating. Crafty breeders have resorted to harmful and repetitive inbreeding to obtain smaller cats resulting in genetically weaker cats often with bad health issues and short lifespans.
When it comes to small cat breeds the Teacup Persian Cat is highly in demand. Many breeders who try to specialize in these animals have failed to do so because they don’t know how large the kittens are going to turn out. So if you want one then try to avoid breeders without reputation. Instead go to a reputable Persian cat breeder and ask for the smallest kitten. More often than not, they will tell you that there is a waiting list that you must join in order to pre-order one.
