Weird Cat Breed: The American Curl
The American Curl is a breed of cat characterized by its strange ears, which curl backward instead of standing up and coming to a point. They are born with straight ears that begin to curl shortly after birth.The ears should be handled carefully because rough handling may damage the cartilage in the ear.
The American Curl is a medium-size cat weighing five to 10 pounds and comes in any color or pattern. The coat, which can be shorthaired or longhaired is stylized by its backward-curling ears, adorned with long tufts of fur,
The American curl is native to North America and was discovered in 1981 in California, USA, after a stray kitten with a long, black coat and curled ears appeared on the doorstep of Joe and Grace Ruga.
They named the kitten, Shulamith, and a few months later, she had her first litter. Two of the 4 kittens she bore had the same curled ears as the mother, and the breed was established. All of the American curl cats today trace back to Shulamith.
The American curl is intelligent, playful, sociable, loving, and family oriented, often with a great fondness for children. It is a good choice for families with older children who will treat it respectfully. The Curl is also perfectly capable of getting along with other cats or cat-friendly dogs in the household.
