Weird Cat Breed: Scottish Fold

The Scottish Fold is a breed of domestic cat with a natural mutation causing the ears to "fold,” bending forward and down towards the front of the head, which gives the cat what is often described as an "owl-like" appearance.

The breed descended from a Scottish fold-eared cat named Susie who was found by a shepherd in 1961 in Perthshire, Scotland. One of Susie's kittens was registered with the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF) in Great Britain in 1966 and the rest is history.

Apart from its large eyes and round body, a Scottish Fold’s most distinguishing feature is its ears. They bend forward and “fold” closely over the cat’s head—a characteristic that people to compare its appearance to an owl or a teddy bear.

The short-haired, medium-sized Scottish Fold comes in every color and pattern, ranging from red, blue, and black to tabby and shaded silver. A Scottish Fold’s eyes can be any shade, although they’re typically copper. Occasionally, there are long-haired Scottish Folds, which some cat associations call the Highland Fold.

It is a sweet, behaved cat that enjoys being around people. It is adaptable to many different environments and can get along well with children, other cats, and pet-friendly dogs. This cat breed likes to arrange themselves in other unusual positions.

Folds are highly sought-after pets and Fold kittens typically cost considerably more than kittens of more common cat breeds.
