Should I Vaccinate My Kitten?

Vaccines are Important

Getting a new cat or kitten is an exciting experience that many new owners will come to enjoy as their first step into the feline keeping world. Welcoming your new kitty takes preparation and knowledge building. Cat health is very important to understand and early stage kittens, strays and other cats will require a general check-up from a local vet. A course of vaccinations will also be in order to make sure that your cat is protected against various flu, leukaemia and other nasty infections.

Kitten Immune Systems

When cats are born, their immune systems are naturally boosted through the mother’s nutritious milk. As the weaning period passes, they will transition from the mother’s milk on a staple diet of your choice and the antibodies normally present will begin to reduce. It’s time to start fortifying your cute companion’s immune system through a course of vaccinations that should be carried out after around 9 weeks of age. It’s best to do this when your cat is living happily in a stable environment and eating a stable diet without any sign of diarrhoea.

Two Shots and Annual Boosters

Your vet will assess before administering the shot. It’s important to not let your cat out of the house before vaccinations are administered as they will be vulnerable to infections in the outdoors. After the first shot, your kitty may not feel 100% but just like humans, their immune system will lead to natural recovery and immunisation. A waiting period of around 3 weeks should be observed before the next shot can be given to boost their immune system. After this point, your cat should rest for a few more weeks before being let out of the house (if allowed to do so). Your vet will normally register your kitten and dates recorded corresponding to vaccinations. Annual boosters will be required along with a check-up to make sure everything is in order.

Always Talk to Your Vet

Inoculations are very important and have been proven to save cats from deadly diseases that can infiltrate young kittens and cats of all ages. Keeping boosters up to date is a priority and every missed appointment puts a cat at risk. Responsible pet keeping is important and some countries may also require a rabies shot. It’s best to consult your local vet to find out about inoculations and make sure a schedule is booked in once your cat has settled at home. Preparation is key to leading a happy and healthy life with your new feline companion and we hope all our fellow cat lovers do the right thing. Meow!
