During his stay in the country, HRH made a formal visit to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Bangkok and presented the parish with a Portuguese statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This parish is one of the oldest in Bangkok and was one of many built by Portuguese immigrants to the Kingdom of Thailand.

As for the statue given to the Thai Catholic community, this image depicts the Immaculate Virgin with the Infant Christ and was made in a traditional Portuguese style. In addition to holding the Christ Child, the Blessed Virgin Mary can be seen holding a symbol of the Portuguese kingdom.

While at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, His Royal Highness had the opportunity to meet with Thai Catholic clergy and faithful. Among many of the dignitaries present was Monsignor Vissanu of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Thailand.

This visit strengthened the bond of unity between Thailand and Portugal, and it also brought together spiritually the members of the Catholic Church from both nations.

Pretty cool! Didn't know there was such a strong relationship with the two countries through the Catholic faith. Interesting. Xx, Kay

Over the centuries, quite a few Portuguese have come to Thailand, built churches, and traded with the Siamese. In the modern age, much of this has scaled back, but their churches still survive.

So interesting! I had no idea. Another reason I love Steem. xx
