Cats: Five Interesting Facts You Didn't Know

You might think you know everything there is to know about cats, but there are several fun facts out there that may surprise you!

Cats can jump up to six times their height

The only other animals that can do that are frogs and fleas. While dogs have a better vertical leap, they can’t match cats when it comes to distance or speed. But it’s not all good news—we should know by now that cats don’t usually do anything in halves. To jump up so high, cats use an amazing amount of power and energy, which means they often need to rest after performing such a feat for a short while before attempting another.

Some cats have 30+ kittens in their lifetime

On average, cats give birth to two kittens every other year. This means that one unspayed or unneutered cat and her offspring can potentially produce 420,000 kittens in seven years. So if you love cats so much that you want hundreds of them in your home—you could adopt a cat from a shelter! With 2.7 million cats entering shelters each year, there’s no shortage of felines in need of good homes.

The average cat sleeps 16 hours per day

If you think your cat is lazy, you’re not wrong. It's estimated that domestic cats sleep around 16 hours per day! To put that into perspective, humans sleep an average of 7 to 8 hours each night. Even if you've adopted a cat and they seem extremely active, remember they are at least sleeping another 10 hours. Some say they need all that downtime in order to keep up with their demanding lifestyles...which we will talk about next.

Indoor-only cats live four times longer than outdoor-only cats

For example, a seven-year-old indoor cat is equivalent to a 28-year-old outdoor cat. Indoor cats are also less likely to be hit by cars or get into fights with other animals. If you’re an apartment dweller and considering bringing home a kitten, you might want to consider how long your pet will live—and how many years that means for you!

In ancient Egypt, if you killed a cat you were put to death

Cats were held in such high regard that if you killed one, you could expect to be put to death as punishment. King Henry VIII had his favorite cat, Purrcy, embalmed and then interred in Westminster Abbey when he died. Cats kill more birds than actual predators do: Contrary to popular belief, cats aren’t killing birds at a higher rate than other factors like disease or car accidents; they just kill a lot of them — nearly half of all bird deaths come from feline attacks.
