Su motivación primordial es por beneficio personal o financiero, en ocasiones pueden estar inmersos en espionaje cibernético, protesta

El termino fu inventado por Richard Stallman, para comprar la astucia de un hacker para realizar una actividad criminal, con el espíritu de alegría y exploración de la cultura de los sombrero blanco.

Los términos"sombrero negro" y "sombrero blanco" derivaron de las películas del Viejo Oeste, donde el vaquero protagonista y antagonista usaban un sombrero de color blanco o negro respectivamente.
