A huge root carving named “The Peach Blossom Spring” is one of the most attractive artworks displayed at the Taoyuan Craft and Art Museum in Changde City, central China’s Hunan Province. Measuring 15.88 meters long, 6.3 meters wide and 3 meters high, the artwork was declared as the biggest willow root sculpture by Guinness World Records in September 2017.
The highlight of the sculpture is not about the size or wonderful craft it presented, but the ancient story it recounts. Based on the famous Chinese tale “The Peach Blossom Spring” written by Tao Yuanming in 421, the artwork panoramically describes the process of a fisherman’s chance discovering an ethereal utopia where people lead an ideal existence in harmony with nature and unaware of the outside world for centuries
