What Was Your First Car?

in #cars5 years ago

Several days ago @slobberchopps and @verhp11 asked what was our first car which brought back a flood of memories which is always fun. My story starts when I was a senior in high school. Obviously this is not my "senior picture" but I think it fair to say it is my senior photo and this a 51 Chevy we saw at a car show.

My first car was a 51 chevy coup. The doors didn't open, the radio didn't work, and the only window that worked was the driver's side otherwise known as my entrance but I got it for 35.00 in 1966. After a couple of weeks a friends father fixed my radio, doors, and windows and filled it with gas...it was perfect until the next day. I drove it to school after going over "Roller Coaster" road for the 10th morning at full speed (80mph) flying as I hit the top of each hill, bounced then gunned it again for the next hill until that last morning when the axle broke. I couldn't steer it and ended up hitting the big thick transformer pole. I was told I broke it into 3 pieces. Anyway, flew off the road, rolled and bounced down a medium size cliff into a creek, landed top up. No blood, totally conscious, broke my back, had surgery and in the hospital for 3 months. Oh, to be 17 again...No Thanks!

Wow, this was a story I wasn't expecting at all. Getting a car for $35 is mind blowing, but it seems like you may have overpaid for it if it was destined to fall apart like that. Good thing you made a full recovery.

It was definitely a good buy. You do understand the axil breaking was not the cars fault. Fixing my car only took the afternoon of my friend's father. He also fixed the radio which I forgot to mention and as I was sitting there stunned at just what had happened the radio came on and I laughed because I had forgotten it worked and to turn it on. Roller Coaster road, if I'm remembering correctly, has about 10 big hilltops to fly from. 10 hills X 10 days = broken axil. And a full recovery I did not make. I continued doing most everything but I had to give up softball which was a big part of my life. I too pitched and played second base.

Thats a nice car and a cool first one but not so much your experience in it I can understand not wanting to be 17 Again
My first car I bought was a Ford Escort GT, I to drove it like a mad man but luckily and it was pure luck I never had a bad accident like that

Sounds like you were young too. They had Ford Escorts in Australia?

I guess they did have them in Australia but fir sure they did in New Zealand 🇳🇿 😎
I got a motorbike when I was 15 and my first car when I was 17 which was the escort

Sorry, I forgot you were from NZ, not Australia. Yes, age 17 with a car, you are lucky to have no wrecks.

No problem most think of Australia, Yes i was lucky indeed, bu i had bene riding motorbikes and tractors and farm trucks since i was about 11 ( not he farm not the roads) so that may have helped as well

If I were to get rich I would buy a Toyota corolla or something for its durability and fuel economy.
And ouch to your accident, I hate back injuries, I want no more of it @willowwisp :?

The Toyota brand is a very well known and good car company around here. We have had several Toyota's in our family and they rarely if ever broke down. But I think a lot of companies have copied Toyota's ways and are producing good cars. @old-guy-photos just bought a Kia and did a post on it about a week or two ago and I think it is a car I would consider because of all the aminities and the price was very fair.

My first car was a 1966 VW bug... Bought it new with $800 I had saved up and a $1,000 loan from my father. Boy was that good on gas.. when the price was .25 a gallon... :-)

I don't think there was or is a cuter fun car to drive than the VW bug. Oh yes, the price of gas was terrific and when there was a gas war it went to .17 a gallon. Gotta love that memory.

Good gosh! You were incredible driver!!
You made your car flew!

It's not hard to make a car fly, just push the gas pedal to the floor until you reach the top of a hill and it will happen...but watch out for those poles and trees...and people.

Ohhhh! You were one of those drivers!!! LOL

Loven life, living on the edge and moving to fast with MUCH ignorance = danger...that was me.
