Chevrolets First Mid Engined Corvette- The AeroVette

in #cars6 years ago

We are finally getting a midengined Corvette, but Chevrolet first had the idea 50 years earlier called the AeroVette. It began life in 1969 known as the XP-882, a total of two prototypes were made, before it was shut down by John Delorean. The AeroVette was dead, but would later be resurrected because of Chevys competitor Ford. When Ford introduced the Pantera, Delorean revisited the idea of the AeroVette, and wanted to have it ready to display at the 1970 New York Auto Show.

In 1972 the AeroVette was revisited, the chassis was reworked and name changed to the XP-895. Chevrolet fused two Wanker 2 rotary engines together producing a 4 rotary engine, that made 420hp. Chevrolet also made an XP-895GT which used a single 2 rotary engine. Unfortunately this was just before the fuel crisis of the early 70s, and due to the rotary engines poor fuel economy Chevrolet stopped their rotary development. The AeroVette lost its heart, and was dead.

The AeroVette concept was dusted off in 1976, the rotary engine was replaced by a 6.6l v8. This is when it was officially given the name AeroVette, and was set to be released in 1980, with a 350ci V8. It would have double folding gullwing doors, and be priced between $15,000 and $18,000. Sounds like a great recipe for an amazing supercar, unfortunately everyone at GM who backed the idea retired, and it was determined that it would be more cost effective to keep the current front engine rear wheel drive design.

Chevrolet finally decided to give the Corvette a midengine design, but I would've loved to see the AeroVette. I understand that cost is very important in business, but so many amazing cars are scrapped due to cost, but that never stop Chevrolet from producing the Chevette and Cavalier, two awful cars. Do you think Chevy made the right choice, or would you have e preferred seeing the AeroVette?
