One Year Wonder GMC Syclone

in #cars5 years ago

In 1991 GMC released this sport truck. At 280 hp this little truck hauled butt. That was pretty much all it was good for hauling with a bed limit of 500lbs and a tow limit of 200lbs. The Syclone was only offered in one color. Unless you were one of the lucky 10 to get a red Marlboro Edition you were getting black. The trucks came with a turbo charged 3.4 liter V6 , 4-speed automatic transmission, and all wheel drive.

The Syclone's biggest claim to fame is beating a Ferrari in a quarter mile race sponsored by Car and Driver magazine. Of course the Ferrari wins after the quarter but that's still pretty darn impressive for a tiny truck!

In 1991 only 2,995 Sylcones were built. The 1992 models were cancelled. The rarity of these trucks has created a cult following. A registry can be found online with individual truck numbers, photos, and where in the country they are located. Owners have swapped in LS motors, converted the auto transmission into a manual, upgraded the turbo, and countless other things.

This year there is a new package for the GMC Canyon. It's the Syclone package! It takes the 308 hp Canyon to 455 hp. Perhaps Car and Driver magazine can recreate the original Syclone vs. Ferrari race. I'd love to see it.

After 3 years of work and many dollars this one is finally ready to hit the road and show off her new antique license plates!
