How To Read The Chart

The lower the number a model has, the better value it is for the range it offers. The best value vehicles are located at the top of the chart.

Findings

• For people looking for cost-effective long range, the long range Model 3 is the best option
• The Chevrolet Bolt is an excellent value as well, and available right away (at a lower price point)
• The revamped Leaf is a significant improvement over the old one, now the 4th best value on the market
• The BMW i3 and the Fiat 500e are the least cost-effective
• The Ioniq should have a big range boost in store, which will make it more competitive

Methodology

The scores were determined by taking the MSRP of the base model and dividing by the EPA rated range. For some vehicles, multiple battery variants were included.

Source information was determined mainly from Car and Driver, with direct manufacturer info used to supplement missing or incomplete information.

This does not measure the overall value of the vehicle, only the range. Other options or features also impact MSRP. It also does not account for the size/class of the vehicle. For example, the Model X is an SUV, which makes the range shorter compared to a car. This was not accounted for in the chart.
