Brutus - The German idea of a sports car
What do you get if you combine aircraft engine and a car? Pure awesomeness! And that is exactly what few crazy germans did.
After the world war Germany was not allowed to have any military aircrafts and the supply of BMW V12 engines was huge. Because wasting it wouldn't be an option, the idea for a fire breathing race car was born.
Since the engine was ment for aircrafts, finding the chassis to hold 510 kg and 1.8 meter long engine was a challenge. They paired the engine with 1908 American-LaFrance chassis that was used for firetrucks.
The BMW aircraft engine has 12 cylinders with total capacity of 46 liters, uses 1 l of fuel per km - In your face Prius :), and is capable of producing 550 hp of contious performance at 1500 rpm and short performance up till 750 hp at 1700 rpm.
Brutus puts his power to the weels via the original three gear gearing mechanism and a chain transmission to the rear axle. Driver can find brakes only on the rear axle and as Jerremy Clarkson said during the test
"brakes, “well, they exist only in the imagination of the madman who built this thing!”.
