Fix your dirty BMW E36 headlights!

in #cars7 years ago

Hello guys!
In this post I am going to show you how to fix your BMW E36 headlights. I have to say that clean lense makes a bit difference when it comes to light output. So sit down, read it and go clean your lamps now!
The important thing is that lamps in E36 are made out of glass, so do not polish them! They won't turn yellow as most of plastic lamps do. They just need a bit cleaning, because of dust, road gravel, etc.

Here are before and after pics:

The difference may not look that big, but trust me - it is. The car looks so much better, and the visibility at night is so much greater! It is worth doing.

First, you have to unscrew the lamp from your car. It is an easy process. The lamp is held only with 4 bolts. After that you can just pull it out of your car. Second step is dissasembling the lamp. That was a bit harder, but it can be done. First, you have to remove clips on top and bottom of the lamp. Depending on the type of the lamp, the number of them may vary. You should be able to remove the outer glass now, but it might be held with glue. If it is, then use a heat gun to melt the glue and remove the glass. If you do not have a heatgun, then just leave - we can do it the other way :)
Next step is to remove the lensen, from the back of the lamp. You will have two glass lensen, be carefull with them! Just pop them out. Right now it's time for cleaning. Use some dish soap with water, clean everything up and dry it. If you didn't remove the outer glass, then you have to clean it through the holes in which lenses are mounted. After drying everything just put it back together and enjoy!

The whole process took me like 2 hours for two lamps. And I was doing it for the first time, so it's not too much!

Thanks for reading guys! I hope you've enjoyed this post :)

You could have shared the video too, it would have been much easier. But great post!

I regret not making it back then :/ But it is an easy process! :)
Thanks! :D

It happens! Yes, it is an easy process.

How did you make sure the aim of the headlights was still correct when you re-installed them ?

I did it by parking my car in front of the wall, like 5 meters away from it. Then I have turned my lights on, set them so that they are outputing light at about 1 meter off the ground. After that I've made some tests on the road with my friend, whether he is blind while looking at my car or not, and it looked fine, so I left it like that :)

Thanks mate, will give that a go when the weather gets a bit better!
