Leyland Marina 262-SIX project. Part 3.

in #cars6 years ago (edited)

Hello everyone i have had some inquiries as to the general specifications of this Leyland Marina. I will start by giving a basic history of the Marina series of vehicles.

The Marina was originaly started as a replacement of the Morris Minor by the British Motor Corporation known for there Austin, Austin Healy, Metropolitan, Morris, MG, Riley, Vanden Plas, And Wolseley brands of vehicles. very soon after the start of the Marina project the British Motor Corporation merged with larger British Leyland empire in 1968. British Leyland had the Rover, Triumph, Jaguar, Land Rover, Range Rover, and Leyland cars trucks and buses.

So the Marina was brought to completion under the British Leyland group. The Marina was released to the British market in April 1971 as the Morris Marina and this was also the first true British Leyland car. Marina range ended up coming as a four door saloon, two door coupe, pickup, panelvan, and station wagens. They came with either the well proven A series engine in 1.3l form or the also well proven B series engine in 1.8l form.

Now in Australia the company was called Leyland Australia and they often did things different to the there parent British Leyland. Leyland Australia reengineered the Marina they fitted the very new E series over head cam engines and front disk brakes as standed also fitted the stronger Borg Warner diffs and some of there gearboxes.

Leyland Australia released the Morris Marina in April 1972 we only got the 4 door saloon and 2 door coupe these had the 1500 and 1750cc E series engines with either a 4 speed manual or 3 speed automatic all floor shift setups.

Australia was in the muscle car race in the early 70s with manufacturers adding bigger and more powerfull engines in lots of cars such as the Holden Torana and Ford cortina being fitted with 6 cylinder engine options over the standed 4 cylinder ones.

In 1973 Leyland Australia did some more reengineering of the Marina to fit the Australian built E6 engine they created from the E series 1750cc 4 by basicley adding two more cylinders to make the 2.623cc 6 cylinder known as big red. The car was now called the Leyland Marina in Australia and could be had with the 1.5l, 1.75l, and 2.62l engines still with manual and automatic transmission options. They did a great job fitting the 6 cylinder into the car without having to lengthen it like all there competition had to do on there cars. The 6 had bigger brakes and stronger suspension with an extra torque rod on the rear axel housing.

WOW, I didn`t know It is straight 6. Great. Could you record a video how it sound?

I will try someday though i have not been able to upload anything to Dtube yet.

Very interesting history thanks for sharing, and not to forget the classic muscle car the Leyland P76, cheers.

Your welcome. Yes Leyland Australia built the awesome P76 in 4.4l V8 and the 2.6l the Marina used. I had both a P76 V8 executive and 6 cylinder super both in automatic. The Marina 6 was quicker then the V8 P76 from memory.

If my memory servers me correct, wasn't the P76 the first car in Australia to have a aluminium block, cheers mate.

Yes you are correct aluminium block and heads. Little known fact the P76 was also the first car atleast in Aus to have crome plated plastic that being the rear light units crome trimming.
