Austin Champ.

in #cars6 years ago

Today i bring to you this Austin Champ from the All British day in Brisbane Australia.

These unique vehicles were designed for the British army and produced from 1951. They were also available for civilian sale a little later in there production life.
The most fascinating optional feature was being able to be driven underwater. You can see in the photo obove a long tube like item laying down along the top of the mud guard. This tube can be raised up as a sealed air intake snorkel and the electrical system was fully sealed to keep water out as well. So as long as the air intake was above water level the rest of the vehicle could be completely under water.
These are a 4WD with independent suspension all round via torsion bars for springing and using double wishbones.

Fitted with a 2.8l Rolls Royce engine being made either by Rolls Royce or Austin. And that drove through a 5 speed gearbox.

Australia had a lot of these imported over the years. So if you are in Aus you can find them relatively easily.

Now this is what I call a serious 4WD not these pretend things they pass off as 4WDs these day's Haha :)
