Next month at Amelia Island (US), this 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera RSR 2.1 Turbo will be heading to auction by Gooding & Company for an estimate price of $6,000,000 :-).
History 911 Carrera RSR 2.1 Turbo
Only four Porsche RSR 2.1 Turbo were produced, R5, R9, R12, and R13, this model. In September 1973, Porsche unveiled a new 911 concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show with fender flares, a large rear wing and Turbo. In October, Porsche announced that the new Carrera RSR will compete for the 1974 World Championship for Makes sponsored by the Martini & Rossi(I love this livery). To comply with FIA regulations, which limited capacity to three liters, a 2.14-liter, turbocharged flat-six engine was developed. At its rear, a single KKK turbocharger was fitted capable of delivering over 500 bhp.
The team Martini Racing entrusted it to the lead-driver pairing of Herbert Müller and Gijs van Lennep. R13 made its competition debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, held in June 1974 and finished 2nd overall behind Matra. After this great debut, the R13 was shipped to the US, where it took part in the 6 Hours of Watkins Glen and once again with van Lennep and Müller, it placed 2nd overall...
Following the 1974 season, Porsche sold R13 to a California dealer and race team owner Vasek Polak. In 1977, he rented the car to Ted Field’s Interscope Racing team for the 24 Hours of Daytona, qualified in 6th position, but engine problems forced an retirement...
