1965 Aston Martin DB5 Vantage Convertible
In my opinion, the last (but not the least) interesting lot during the RM Sotheby's Amelia Island Sale is this beautiful 1965 Aston Martin DB5 Vantage Convertible. The auction will starte at $US 1,400,000.
It's not the famous James Bond's DB5, a standard saloon model (more than 1,000 examples produced) but one of the rarest Aston Martin available, the DB5 Vantage convertible, only 7 built. A beauty in this color scheme...
History of the Aston Martin DB5
The Aston Martin DB5 was released in July 1963 based on the design of the Italian coachbuilder founded in 1926 in Milan, Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera. The initial DB was to honour the owner of Aston Martin between 1947 and 1972, Sir David Brown. The DB5 series is more an evolution of the DB4 than a new model. The main upgrade was the the adoption of a new engine, 4.0 litre (the same on the 1961 Lagonda Rapide). For the design, it looks like the Series 5 DB4, only the twin fuel filler caps make the difference.
This model is one of seven DB5 Vantage convertibles. The Vantage specification was presented to the public in September 1964, it was a high performance kit for the DB5 (40 hp more of the standard model). It included :
- flow-tuned intake manifolds in order to have a ram effect (to increase engine power),
- advanced ignition timing,
- cylinder head with extra large ports,
- advanced power assisted brake system...
Specification
The Aston Martin DB5 is equipped with triple Weber twin-choke carburetors producing 325 hp at 5,750 rpm. It can reach 100 kmh in just 6.5 seconds (the standard DB5 in 8 seconds).
This model was finished in Peony Red with for the interior a tan Connolly leather upholstery with matching convertible top. Just beautiful...
