Do you have a dream car and always wondered how it feels to be behind the steering wheel? Or are you a car blogger/steemer and wish to impress your fellow competitor by sharing your real driving experience?

Follow these 7 golden rules to ensure the test drive is a top-notch experience:

  1. Preparation
Inform yourself about the car of your desire. Each brand offers in-depth information on their website about the various models and configuration possibilities. Going into the conversation with at least a basic understanding will show the sales person that your inquiry is serious. A car purchase is a big deal! Keep your credibility by being informed.

  2. Dress to Impress
Don't panic! You do not have to wear your most expensive suit or dress but please do not show up in sweat pants. I recommend clean casual business attire. A nice pair of dark jeans, a button-up shirt or classy sweater and a clean pair of shoes will get you a long way. Ladies, keep your hair styled and a casual make-up. Guys, make sure you smell fresh. This will earn you the respect you require to be trusted with the keys to your dream car!

  3. Dress to drive
While paying attention to the above, please do not show up in clothing which makes you feel uncomfortable or sits too tight. You want to enjoy the drive and not feel awkward behind the wheel. Ladies, please leave your 10-inch heels at home.

  4. Pick a route
Before you receive the keys to your desires object, have your route planned out! Be aware of rush hour traffic in your city and try to avoid it. Most dealerships offer the car for a limited period of time, e.g. one hour, which you do not want to spend in traffic. Make sure your route includes a section through the city, down the high way and along a quiet area, maybe even parking lot, to fully test the driving capabilities of your vehicle. Keep an eye on the weather forecast as well and avoid thunderstorms, hail/snow and heavy rain.

  5. Bring your ID/license
Bring your driver's license and/or ID to the test drive. The dealer will most likely not let you drive unless you can present these forms of identification and driving ability.

  6. Ask the right questions
Before you start your journey, make sure you understand the coverage in case of an accident. Accidents can always happen and not necessarily because it was your own fault. Most dealers will let you sign an agreement which contains the amount you need to pay out of your pocket in case of an accident. In case you are unable to afford the coverage, do not proceed with the test drive.

  7. Follow-up
Once your test drive was conducted and you brought the keys back to the dealer, show your appreciation and have a review of your test drive. What did you like, what did you not like? Thank the dealership for their effort (each car is individually prepared for the test) and do not give them false information about your intentions. Remain truthful and do not close doors for yourself - you may walk into the same dealership again into the future :-)
