The first LS400 was amazing for 1989.

What made the launch possible?
60 designers
1,400 engineers
2,300 technicians
220 support workers

More than 400 prototypes
And the $1 billion in costs.

Really like this brand!

Thanks for the share and the details :)

Well, first LS was somewhat exquisite at the time, indeed. Excluding this, the ur-Lexus model, I believe ALL following models turned out to be bunch of crap soap boxes with posh badge. In my opinion, the resurrection of THE Lexus individual chasis models (not rebranded Aristos/Camrys, which were not bad cars by definition, but not the essence of this brand) turned out to be 2005, just when the third gen GS was introduced, followed by IS and then LS - all three really clean designs, competitive in market and finally real value for money. The same era sparked launch of IS-F, astonishing LF-A and rapid progress in technology as well as more aggressive model expansion in line with ze germans too. Currently, they must focus on getting rid of that stupid spindle grille and more market segmentation, engine options and so on - since they theoretically have all what is needed to launch products very competitive to market leaders - Germans. Most important aspect of Lexus being reliability, something not all can achieve.

There is a huge difference between Lexus models on different markets and it's for years now... But Lexus always did great cars.

Let me put it like this - yes, indeed, they have market specifics, such as GX or ES - which are sold in US, mainly, but my point was that most of Lexus range until 2005 was pretty much rebranded, bland garbage. And I do not advocate even now calling all models "GREAT" and meaning that always they were good - CT is still remade garbage, ES is basically camry and GX/LX - I do not see the point of these lard boxes at all. On the other hand, what is really good - the RWD Lexus-only architecture, starting from 2005. GS450H for example, is one good reason to prove how solid it is, compared to the well esteemed business sedans - A6, 5er and E-Class. Price/performance as well as overall value is on par with aforementioned.

Not to mention LF-A - which was the showcase of all that is great at Lexus.
