Model 3 floods US market and becomes global best-seller
After the Dutch and European EV sales, we now have a complete image of the Global EV sales of July (thanks to EV Sales Blogspot). As could be expected, Model 3 crushes the "competition".
July sales
Tesla Model 3 wins this month by a huge margin. Over 14,600 M3's were sold (still only in the US and Canada). This is almost double the sales of the second best sold EV, the Nissan Leaf (7,600). The BYD Qin PHEV came in third, with just over 4,000 registrations.
Year-to-date ranking
On the YTD ranking the Leaf is still leading. Almost 50,000 Leafs have been sold this year. The Model 3 passed the 40,000 (and 30,000) YTD sales milestone this month and climbed to the second spot. With the current monthly sales, I expect that M3 will be on top in September. A good August could even make it reach top position next month already. The BAIC EC-series, which was first at the end of May and second at the end of June, is falling even further on the ranking to number 3.
Looking at the manufacturer ranking, Tesla overtook BYD becoming the best selling brand globally. BAIC is losing ground to the top 2 and is seeing BMW close in on their third spot.
The race for number 1 looks too-close-too-call, but it might not be very close when/if the Model 3 continues to ramp up. I'll be watching this closely for you the coming months.
