The calm before the storm.
There is just something about walking through the pits that is like a zen moment for me. The sweet smell of race gas , the sting in your eyes of methanol burning out of the exhaust. Being able to identify what a car is going to do throughout the race by smell or watching it back out of a pit stall and seeing how much the car moves when the steering is turned giving you an idea of front end alignment specs if you have a keen eye. Just a lifetime of love for automobiles combined with the competitive nature of wanting to go out and be the best. Scratch that, wanting to destroy everyone else. Knowing that you are sending your driver out there with the best weapon you could put together. Knowing that anything can happen in the blink of an eye. You are putting someone you love out there and sending them into a corner at 80 to 100 MPH and he trusts you enough to just fucking send it and he knows you did your job so he can do his. To me that is beauty.
We had an LA Times reporter hanging with the team I was on for one Winternationals (NHRA). We made a pass and were pushing the car back into the pits. I steered. He asked me "Don't you wish you could drive it?" And was really surprised at my 'no'. I told him "I want to make sure this car is as fast as can be, and that my driver is safe. I have no wish to go that fast at all."
I get it. Thanks for a terrific post. Made my day.
Oh hell I didn't know you were a drag race guy. My buddie Jason Carter just set the radial vs the world record http://www.racepagesdigital.com/jason-carter-mark-micke-set-top-mph-in-radial-vs-the-world-at-us-street-nationals-presented-by-nitto-tire/
Then the motor came apart 2 weeks later. Blew the whole bottom end completely off the motor. I have a nitrous fed 2000 camaro SS that I race occasionally. Our local track got shut down so it is kind of a garage ornament for now. Lol.
Nice. They were supposed to have the season opener today here but got rain out. They were trying to open the track all week for first practice but it was always raining.
That is how it was here for the last month.
Another tough night. Car was not quite right from being rolled last week so it was tight on corner entry and had a push in the middle of the corner in the heat race. The guy that flipped us last week was once again out of control and clipped our right front tire. This caused it to cut the sidewall of the right front tire and bend the tie rod. Well we managed to fix that at the track with some spare parts and realign it and put on another tire. Started in 10th place for the feature and worked up to 5th. Not what i wanted but it was decent I guess. It was a good field of cars that were fast. We will be better next week. Gotta put in some garage time this week. Thanks to everyone for following. I will try and find some video. there was a new guy out there doing video so hopefully it turned out well.
