RE: Dodge A100 Forward Control Van: Fitting a custom Radiator #4

in #cars6 years ago

Some of the melty carnage under the dash(This is looking straight up from the floor)... Those two big wires with the copper showing are the hot line from the alternator, to the dash mounted ammeter, and then back to the battery... They were arc-welded together for more than 6 feet, and all the other wiring was melted into it. only reason this thing was not a fireball was because steel is hard to burn...

Thanks for the explanation. I wonder how many vans were put out of commission by that. Is it a common flaw?

Sadly, very common across the whole MOPAR line, as well as early Fords and Chevys... MOPAR kept that poor design up longer than most though, right into the early 70's... Stupid is as Stupid does. I rewired without an Ammeter, and instead a volt meter.

Wow, probably smelled a little like planned obsolescence while it was welding together.

HA HA! Smelled like broken dreams for Bruce, the guy that drove it for 28 years... and smelled like poverty to me, when pricing pre made wiring harnesses...

Lol Poor Bruce! 28 years is a good run though!!!
Poor wallet... keep steeming.

So worth the effort! This little van makes people either smile, or clutch their children in fear. I'm happy with either result. ;)

Lol, I've noticed vans kinda do that.
