San Diego International Auto Show (12/28/17-1/1/18) - Part-5 Exotic Cars & Supercars

in #cars7 years ago

Exotic & Supercars are inherently an offshoot extension of Sport & Performance Cars, that from an automotive standpoint pushes the envelope in terms of engineering, technology, and styling, which as you would then expect, translates and pushes the envelope in terms of an exotic or super price - - that generally begins around $175,000.

The specific San Diego International Auto Show Exotic & Supercar Brand Vehicles that are being showcased with photos in this article are the following:

• Ford GT

• Accura NSX

• McLaren 650S

• Audi R8

The specific Ford vehicle that was photographed at the San Diego International Auto Show was the:

• Ford GT - 2017 MY

The Ford GT was first unveiled to the public at the 2015 NAIAS held in Detroit in January, 2015.  More specifically Ford pulled the cover off the GT during the Pre-Show Press Days, where Ford not only stunned the entire Press audience with the vehicle, they also wound up stealing the entire show as it was considered by most as the Best of Show vehicle.  The fact that Ford was able to keep their development and work of this Supercar hidden to the public for literally years, until it's very unveiling at the NAIAS, was the talk of the town for Months afterwards.

Production of this vehicle is very limited (only 250 per year over the 2016-2020 time period), and the lucky ones who are selected by Ford to purchase the vehicle will have to pay a $225,000 deposit for this Supercar, representing 50% of it's $450,000 starting price.  Moreover, every purchaser must sign a contract that they will not re-sell the vehicle for a minimum of 1-year after they take possession of the vehicle.

The Ford GT is equipped with a 3.5L Ecoboost V6 (Ford) Twin-Turbo Engine, mated with a 7-Speed PowerShift Dual Clutch Transmission, that creates 647-hp and 550 lb-ft of torque.

It is worth noting that in June, 2016, just 18-Months after the Ford GT unveiling at the Ford NAIAS, this vehicle won the grueling 24-hour LeMans Race, precisely 50-years after the Ford GT40 won the LeMans in 1966.

The specific Acura vehicle that was photographed at the San Diego International Auto Show was the:

• Acura NSX - 2017 MY

The Acura NSX was first introduced as a Concept Vehicle at the (January) 2012 Detroit NAIAS, where it wowed the onlookers and was considered by many as one of the Best (if not The Best) of the entire Show.  However the folks at Acura took over 3-years before the vehicle was actually available for Purchase, and needless to say numerous powertrain and styling changes were made versus the original Concept, yet even today the vehicle wows the onlookers from a styling perspective.

The Acura NSX is advertised as a Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive, 573-hp game-changer, with a 3.5L DOHC Twin-Turbo Engine, and a 9-speed Dual Clutch Transmission, with a price tag that starts at $156,000.

The specific McLaren vehicle that was photographed at the San Diego International Auto Show was the:

• McLaren – 650S Spider - 2017 MY

The MSRP for a McLaren 650S Spider is $284,500, and comes equipped with a 3.8L 641 HP V8 Engine, and a 7-Speed Manual Transmission.  The vehicle is 177.6” L x 75.1” W x 47.4” H, with a curb weight of 3,020 lbs.

The specific Audi vehicle that was photographed at the San Diego International Auto Show was the:

• Audi R8 Spyder - 2018 MY

The Audi R8 was first unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show.  Today’s Audi R8 Spyder starts at $177,000 and comes equipped with a 5.2L V10 FSI dual injection engine and a virtual cockpit with a 12.3” LCD digital instrument cluster.

Great Photos.
Ford could have used a 8 cylinder engine though pushing 750+ hp and that would have been a totally insane car

It seems wrong that the Ford GT has a six cylinder engine.

Great photos, its so hard to get a good photo at a show like that when everyone is standing around the cars (the NSX seemed to be the only one not roped off), well done.

Glad to see you like the photos! Many Thanks for the compliment! Yes the NSX was the only Exotic / Supercar not roped off, but it was locked, or I would have taken some interior photos as well.

Even though the Ford GT is using only a 3.5 L V6 Ecoboost, it's still making very impressive power. Just think what it would make if they put the 5.0 L (twin turbo) or the 5.8 L (supercharged) in it.

I think Ford's marketing (or lack thereof) worked so much better than that of the Acura NSX. The NSX was presented way to early. It wasn't even driveable and it was presented countless times before it was finished. By the time it reached production it was already old news and somewhat forgotten. Maybe this is just the impression I get from my news sources, but it would be fun to find out how well the sales of the NSX went. Nice and informative post;)

First, Thank You for the compliments - - I'm glad to see you and so many others enjoyed it. Second, I agree that the Acura team either introduced the Concept too early, or they took far too long within their Development team to bring the Final Product to Production. Lastly, according to Honda's published Sales numbers for the U.S. (issued Jan. 3, 2018) , they had NSX Full Year Vehicle Sales of 581 / 269 for 2017 / 2016 CY's respectively - - keeping in mind that they just started selling the NSX in 2016 CY.

All of them are gorgeous, but my heart belongs to the McLaren :)
