Mercedes cars are named after the name of an Austrian girl

In 1897, Austrian businessman Emil Jellinek traveled from his home in Nice, France to buy a car at the Daimler factory in Cannstatt, Germany. On his return to the French Riviera, his car Daimler Phoenix made so much sense that he decided to take part in the local competition under the name "Mercedes" after his favorite 9-year-old daughter. Understanding the business potential of the new car, not only has it ordered another 36 cars, but has also secured the franchise to sell them in several other countries. Gottlieb Daimler has agreed to be sold under the name "Mercedes."

The Mercedes brand was recorded after Daimler's death in 1900 and the three-pointed star became the trademark. Daimler once drew the emblem on a postcard to his wife, the star symbolizing the growth of business in land, sea and air transport.

For Karl Benz, it was easy to give a name for his car: he included his name in a toothed wheel symbolizing the solidity of his technology in Mannheim. The toothed wheel later became a wreath of laurels.

After the First World War, Daimler and Benz's companies worked together, generally making ads on the same posters. They blended in in 1926, combining the laurel crown with the star in 3 corners as the trademark.

Interestingly, although Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz were two of the major pioneers in the automotive industry, they probably never met, even though they lived only 100 kilometers (60 miles) in Germany. Daimler died in 1900. Daimler-Benz merged in 1926.
