Even right at the end of its life, the outgoing Honda Civic Type R remained the benchmark for front-wheel-drive hot hatchbacks in America. The Volkswagen Golf GTI might have something to say about that, but the Type R had a more visceral driving character that endeared it to enthusiasts.
