The word bong is originally derived from the ancient Thai word "baung" and used as a term for a type of pipe made of bamboo. Basically, a bong consists of a big cylinder filled with water. There are holes on both sides, sometimes only one. The so-called kick hole is not found on all bongs. The chillum to be named is located in the larger hole and runs upwards. At the top, a sieve is inserted, whereupon the cannabis is finally placed. Really high-quality bongs have a pre-cooler, which is filled with water, cools the smoke and makes it less scratchy. Also, a diffuser can be installed, which filters the smoke more and therefore tastes more pleasant and supple. In addition, a catalyst can be inserted between the head and chillum, which filters out residues.

How to use a bong

Those who have never smoked with a bong, this is best done by experienced bong smokers. It is important for the first time that you do not inhale too deeply and not all at once. Those who have not had any experience with any kind of smoking could possibly experience a rather oppressive sensation in their lungs. Some get short-term breathlessness or an extreme coughing fit.

But now for use: Most bongs have a kick hole, this is the small hole at the back of the bong (located about in the lower third of the cylinder). Now the mixture or just the pure cannabis is placed on the sieve in the chillum. The cylinder, which is open at the top, must now be closed with the mouth. With a lighter or match, ignite the cannabis and inhale, simultaneously with the mouth. If there is a kick hole on the bong, it has to be closed, at best with one finger. Otherwise, the smoke would escape through this and not even properly pulled up. As long as the bong in the smoke accumulates is now pulled. Of course, it can also be discontinued at will and then pulled again. In order to smoke your head fast, it is usual to put only a little cannabis on the chillum. Of course, more cannabis can be shared with multiple consumers.

How do you clean a bong?

Who uses a bong will find that there quickly accumulate many residues and this must therefore be maintained accordingly. Otherwise, the residues can get worse and stink. The chillum can be cleaned with a cleaning brush. Corresponding bong accessories can be bought online very well. Of course, cleaning with an old toothbrush is also possible. Sea salt can help with heavier soiling and settled deposits. Salt usually removes all residues effortlessly. Dishwashing or tabs for the dishwasher are also recommended. However, you must then rinse the bong well, since such remedies are naturally toxic and should not be smoked with.

TIP: Hot water and baking soda not only helps with yellowed smoker teeth, but also for residues in the bong.

Bong-types

The glass bong
Glass bongs are extremely durable and are therefore sold most frequently. Long lasting, of course, only until it breaks due to falling. Glass bongs can be very different in their designs, variants and also in the price. Cheap glass bongs are available from just 10 euros to buy, a little more expensive models reach the three-digit range quite. If you want to try a bong for the first time, you should first get something a little cheaper, with which you can approach carefully. It is not at all so rare that many prefer to resort to the joint again after the bong smoking. But of course it is also possible the other way round. Glass bongs can be extremely chic and extravagant and look really nice. So there are colorful glass bongs with patterns or extravagant designs with style. Who often and likes to consume in society, the may therefore quietly switch to a slightly more expensive variant, after all, creates such a bong once again a very special flair.

But: If the bong falls down, then it is broken and that can be annoying.

The acrylic bong
Glass bongs can be quite heavy at times and quite impractical if you want to take them somewhere. In addition, there are simply people who simply should not put a glass bong in their hands. For just such cases, there is the acrylic bong. These are much lighter in weight and can be tolerated virtually anywhere. They survive minor accidents mostly without any scratches and are often cheaper, but not so durable or beautiful. Acrylic bongs also have a kick hole, but it's a lot harder to clean. The bong is much smaller and can therefore be too small for any brushes or cleaning things. Due to the material (hard plastic) and the smoke are usually difficult to remove residues, which usually can never be completely removed. This makes cannabis smoking with a bong a bit unhygienic and a new purchase is quickly on.

Holland Bong
The Holland Bong is externally recognizable by the fact that it looks like a vase and is not shaped like a cylinder. In the middle of the bong this narrows and widens again to the mouthpiece. The bamboo bong
Bamboo bongs are not really common in this country and hard to get, as there are very few online retailers who can still sell bamboo bongs. But if you are traveling abroad, you should buy a souvenir there. On many islands bongs are being built from bamboo. In almost all bamboo bongs, however, lacks the kick hole, so that the smoke can not escape through this. Here, just the mouth of the mouthpiece must be attached and the smoke escapes by itself. The bamboo bongs, however, are the hardest to clean because they are not transparent and residues can hardly be detected. But whoever possesses such a bamboo bong will probably be one of the fewest people to possess such a bong.

The ice bong
An ice bong can be confused relatively quickly with a glass bong, as these two variants are quite similar. The ice bong, however, has a narrowing below the mouthpiece, so that the consumer can fill in ice cubes and the smoke can be pulled through the ice cubes. The comparison with a precooler can not be pulled, that's another thing altogether. However, you can combine a precooler with the ice cubes - promised: That really pops. The ice bong is indeed a unique experience, because without cooling the smoke of another bong often tastes scratchy and the consumer often gets coughing fits. Through the ice cubes, the smoke cools down.

Build a bong by yourself

Can be done, does not have to be. If you have no money for a cheap bong, but for cannabis, you can build a bong yourself with simple budget funds. There are numerous tutorial videos on YouTube that are more or less worthy of imitation. So, how can you build a bong yourself and what do I need for it?

Here is a possible variant:

Actually, you do not need much: two empty plastic bottles, tape and scissors, an obliquely cut straw and of course the usual smoking tool - that's all.

Wash out the bottles thoroughly first and make sure that they are as possible without dents and wrinkle free. Now you cut one of the bottles just below the middle as straight as possible and put this part in front of you on the table. The other part is now placed headfirst in the first part - of course, before the lid comes off, he should be on it. (By the way: bottle labels are uncool - so down with it!)

The second bottle is now cut off at the top of the neck (where it is narrower). You can dispose of the lower part, from the top we take the lid down and put it with opening upwards into the previous construction. Now the two bottles almost look like a whole again. Take the cut straw and put it in the bottom part on one side. (Cut small hole with pocket knife)

Of course, our bong construction still needs to be sealed extremely well and made impermeable to air. Uses tesa and tape to really reach all cut edges and seal them airtight. The opening at the top remains logically free.
