We return to the discussion of Cannabis Business and Education, and the turning tides in the U.S and all over Europe, as we witness the rolling back Reefer Madness era politics en masse.

For anyone out there who is looking for hands on training in Cannabis Business, is curious about what is happening, where the research is being done, what level to get involved at, and how to learn more, I've put together this four part series, the culmination of 30+ hours of research on current developments within the Cannabis Educational sphere. There are numerous Cannabis Campus projects ranging in size, capacity, and focus.

This series is organized by the type of offerings each Campus provides.

In this section I've compiled schools with a curriculum focused specifically on Cannabis, whether farming, production, business, extraction, or law. They each have an on-campus experiential component, with no direct accredited University affiliation, though some have created their own form of certification process:

Oaksterdam University

(Oakland, CA)

One of America’s first cannabis-focused educational institutions. Founded in 2007 by Richard Lee, who also founded the Hemp Research Company and the Oakland Civil Liberties Alliance. The faculty and staff includes advocate Dale Sky Jones and horticulturist Ed Rosenthal, who has authored many authoritative titles in the Cannabis sphere. Oaksterdam also features classes taught by an extensive number of lawyers specializing in cannabis law. For those seeking to enter or expand in the cannabis industry, as the University puts it, “our legal professors not only teach you about the law, they helped write the law.”

Typical courses offered:
Indoor & Outdoor Horticulture, Sit down classroom classes in Oakland, California.
Length of courses: 14 Weeks – $1295, 2 Days: $545 – $845,
Price per classic semester: $37/hour or $1295;
$100 application fee. Price for all certifications $545 to $1595

Oaksterdam is the winner of Best Classroom Style Cannabis College accolades according to multiple online sources.
Their website boasts :

Clover Leaf University

Clover Leaf University offers courses in general cannabis education, and also specializes in educating and facilitating understanding of cannabis law, and developing cannabis business, with in-house cultivation and budtender certifications.

Located in downtown Denver, they supplement in-person class time with regular webinars and online courses. Ed Rosenthal is Cultivation Instructor, and Chloe the founder is first in CO to receive accreditation from the board of Higher Education. Formed in 2013, Member of NCIA.

Length: 2 to 4 hour courses, 3-day certification programs, Sit down classroom classes in Colorado
Price per course: $99 to $399.00, $499 to $2,000,
Price for all certifications $600 to $3000

The Trichome Institute

(Denver, CO & Online)

The Trichome Institute offers online training for sales and budtending, as well as pioneering a specialized process known as “interpening,” in which students are taught to identify and understand the various cannabis strains by interpreting the plant’s terpene profile and flower structure. Their interpening training course is comparable to a class for a wine sommelier, for students to be able to detect subtle and unique features of different cannabis strains through the use of guidebooks, infographics, and certification courses. The Terpening Training courses have two levels, both of which require a one-day training course held at the Colorado Free University, complete with an exam for Level 2 students.

The Trichome Institute also offers a Responsible Vendor course, licensed by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and the Marijuana Enforcement Division, which they state is of benefit to marijuana businesses in Colorado. The Responsible Vendor course is taught in conjunction with Hemp Temps, a staffing agency for the cannabis industry.

Length of courses: Courses are 3-4 hours long, held once a month, or available online.
