For today's weed news we go to the great nation of South Africa.
In an incredible turn of events, South Africa's highest court just ruled that banning cannabis is unconstitutional and simultaneously legalized personal growing and personal consumption of weed in private places!
In other words, South Africa just became the latest country to legalize trees!
"It will not be a criminal offense for an adult person to use or be in possession of cannabis in private for his own personal consumption," said Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo.
This landmark decision comes roughly one year after a Provincial Court legalized private cannabis use in Western Cape, where Cape Town, the nation's capital is located.
"Obviously this judgment is only the first opening of a door, but we have two years to determine how the new law will really look. Needless to say, dagga (the South African word for marijuana) will have to be descheduled in the Illicit Drugs Act and the Medicines and Related Substances Act," said Jeremy Acton, leader of South Africa's Dagga party.
Even though the country's Parliament now has two years to bring laws up to speed with the new ruling, people will be protected from weed-related prosecution from here on out as long as their consumption and growing operations really are for personal use.
