Cannabis and Bees!!

in #cannabis6 years ago

Hey everyone, what a fantastic surprise this was. Today I did my usual bee rounds to make sure they are happy and thriving and to my surprise and joy, stumbled across these 'bad boys'!!

What a 'Shock' this was, Cannabis has just been legalized in South Africa and I have always been an ardent supporter..

The 'bunny hugger nature boy' I am, had a spike of adrenaline, BEES AND MARIJUANA the two best things on EARTH WOW, a certain match made in heaven and I didn't even plant or look for it. This whole bee journey has been a total dream and today's incredible find was just another testament to that!

I made a rather funny video too (as I do which I will be posting later) featuring both the weed and bees be sure to stay tuned for that!

I picked a few, they smell totally bodacious I will have you know, I then put them in water to hydrate. I plan to plant them in the next day or two. My Aunt who loves her cannabis tea will be getting some of these two. She kindly asked me for more LOL bless her. More she shall be receiving!

One question dawned on me. When these bloom will the bees harvest the nectar and what will the honey taste like? Maybe @rebeccaryan will be able to elucidate on that matter? ;)

Here they are chilling and hydrating before been transplanted into pots both here and at my Aunts place. I shall be keeping you posted on this wild feral 'Mary Jane'

My best educated guess is that the honey will contain the essence of the terpene and flavonoid profile of whatever the strain(s) of cannabis that the bees are collecting nectar from.
In Canada, we can buy crop specific honey. For example, buckwheat honey tastes like buckwheat because those are the flowers that the bees collect nectar from...huge fields of buckwheat so I would think the bees would have to feed mainly from cannabis in order for the honey to taste like it.
I also think that any THC or other cannabinoids that the honey might contain, would be in their raw form and therefore, minimally psychoactive.
This isn’t negative.
I would consider it a superfood with valuable medicinal compounds and it should be marketed as such @craigcryptoking! (Wink, wink. Always here to kick your ass into gear and give you another job. Lol!)

You're a mine of information @rebeccaryan! Fascinating comment. I agree that they will contain the essence and I think quite a mild tasting cannabis honey. We also buy crop specific honey here. And local only. We used to have our own hives until the drought but are battling to find honey in our area. Areas specific is medicinally better than that from further afield. Looking forward to learning more from you. Thanks to my brother for mentioning you. And which of our aunt's like cannabis tea @craigcryptoking?! Horror! Shock! Disbelief!

Hi there @buckaroo! Great to meet you.
Are you helping your brother in this honey venture?
Please see my latest comment to him, but for both of you...huge market to tap into, with small run, niche honey. ;)

No @rebeccaryan. We live at opposite ends of the country. We used to have about 20 hives on our homestead and sold the majority of the wonderful honey. But we're 4 years into a drought and lost all our hives, bar one. Beekeeping is the most remarkable hobby/job

Hi sis Aunti Janice lol I assume she likes the plants she tells me but not sure what she uses it for.. Don't tell Mommy please I don't want a saga over this as you can imagine how it may escalate! x

Don't tell who what?!

LOL, that's my girl :P

Hehee ooo lucky me thanks a ton @rebeccaryan buckwheat WOW our big crops here are Sunflower and Eucalyptus.. I want to change that all and sell Cannabis Honey inspired by @rebeccaryan ?? I better get planting asap hehehe thanks for the lovely comment. Cheer$;) x

Good morning to both you @craigcryptoking and @buckaroo!
Maybe another division of your honey operations, is just around the corner...eucalyptus honey could be marketed as a special respiratory elixir. If I had access to eucalyptus honey, I’d be selling it in my shop to combat cold and flu season. I would think it would be a quite a strong flavour but would really kick ass in terms of being able to soothe a raw throat and open up congested nasal passageways.
(Now you’ve got 2 new products in your line of medicinal honey. Lol!)

Look at you and all these amazing ideas I like how that sounds like it alot. Glad you met my sister you two will get on a dream, very similar in many regards shes also an off grid health nut, I just ordered some soap, moisturizer from her too. Which reminds me @buckaroo why not do a post on all those products you make and sell??

Nice post on cannabis.

Craig! Treasure!

Bro, make some "honey pot!" Harvest the oils and put it in some honey. I bet it would be damn near the best thing you ever had.

Hehe too right brother. Too right ; )

Sometimes the unexpected can really surprise you!!! In a good way!

Aint that the truth brother ;)

That’s a good question. I know there is a plant in Cambodia that when in bloom the nectar the bee collects makes the honey a hallucinogen. I’m curious on if this cannabis growing is from your seeds, or is it wild?

I am actually not sure brother, what I can say is it was an epic dream finding these bad boys and I plan to grow and harvest ASAP will keep you all posted ;P

PS: Not my seeds but there are folks in the area so i assume they scattered them around??

It could also be wind, birds. I wonder if its a pure landrace. That would be sweet! Ill be following along and hopefully see these flower.

Cannabis is wind pollinated, not insect pollinated. Bees aren't very interested in cannabis "flowers" or "nectar". There are far better options for them most of the time.
It's possible to infuse honey with cannabinoids, but that's another topic completely. :)
