Afrobeat legend, Fela Kuti, was a known pan-Africanist activist, and Ogun devotee, but he was also a dedicated marijuana user, who even invented his own edible!

It's hard to say when Fela tried cannabis for the first time, but by the mid-seventies he was so fond of it, that he worked up a unique recipe for a cannabis infused honey/palm oil cream with a lot of herbs, slowly simmered up to two weeks, which he called goro.

However, his love for the sacred herb had an ironic twist in 1974, when his Lagos home, named Kalakuta Republic, got raided second time in a few months by Nigerian military and police for "subversive activity" (it was a headquarter of his own youth organisation called Young African Pioneers).

As the story goes, the cops stormed inside hoping to find him in possession of cannabis as he wasn't really trying to hide his habit. But when he was just about to get busted with a joint, he showed them to the astonished pigs, and gobbled it down in a flash!

This only infuriated law enforcement, who took him to a jail in Timbuktu, where he was supposed to give his precious stool for an analysis, which he eventually managed to swap with one of his cellmates... which led to the recording of one of his most famous albums named after the explosive title track Expensive Shit!

Obo na monkey for Yoruba land
Him go bend him yansh him go shit
Him go commot away from him shit
Him shit go be the last thing wey he go like to see
