The end of vegetative stage signs the beginning of flowering for cannabis plant, or the reproductive stage, which finishes with beautiful buds if we avoid pollination

However, first we need to establish the sex of our plant to know what we're growing as most of cannabis hybrids are dioecious, which means we'll see both males and females.

Certainly, a lot of growers these days stick to clones or feminised seeds. This doesn't exclude an occasional surprise though, a male, that many don't really need, but can still pop up in our garden, so we need to learn how to recognise sex early to grow in peace of mind.

Due to abundance of varieties on the market, that rarely share the same traits, it's really hard to say when your cannabis plant will show sex. The quick ones usually show it in 6-8 weeks, but it can take as long as 15 weeks. And some will only show it after the photoperiod has been switched.

But we should DEFINITELY start examining our plants carefully after they pass 6 weeks of vegetative stage. And if we can't tell then, we do it every few days after that until we're 100% that our plant is female or male.

It's not really difficult, but needs some practice nonetheless, which is the best way to gain the knowledge. And knowledge is power, baby!

To make it easier, I really recommend getting a 30x loupe, which helps to see the details clearly. Once we have it, we look at the internodes, where branches connect to the main stem.

There we'll see two types of preflowers when the time is right: ovules with „crab claws” (male ones), and pointed nubs with white pistil protruding (female ones). As soon as we're able to tell, we keep the females, and move males to the other room, or we destroy them swiftly if we don't need them.

Once we've done that, we switch the photoperiod indoor to 12/12 for hybrids and 11/13 for sativas, or wait until days start getting shorter outdoor.

In the same time we need to make sure, that we've already started training our plant by whatever method we chose to roll with: LST, topping, SCROG, super cropping, cause once they start flowering it's usually too late.

We should also double-check, that we have enough vertical space, cause most of hybrids will double in flowering, and that we transplanted our plants into the biggest pots we could fit into our space.
