Bernie Sanders Slams Decision Not To Reclassify Marijuana

in #cannabis8 years ago

The Vermont progressive has introduced legislation that would free states to regulate it as they see fit.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) threw some shade at the Drug Enforcement Administration on Thursday.

The DEA announced it would end the federal government’s monopoly on marijuana cultivation, but to the disappointment of many drug reform proponents, the agency declined to reclassify pot from its list of “most dangerous” narcotics.

Sanders made clear on Twitter that he was among those dissatisfied with the decision not to remove marijuana from the federal government’s list of “Schedule I” drugs, where it sits alongside heroin and LSD. (Schedule I is the most severe category of illegal substances, referring to drugs with the greatest tendency for abuse and no known medical uses.)

People can argue about the pluses and minuses of marijuana, but everyone knows it's not a killer drug like heroin.

While seeking the Democratic presidential nomination, Sanders introduced legislation last November that would entirely “de-schedule” marijuana, or remove it from the Controlled Substances Act, effectively decriminalizing the substance at the federal level. It is modeled on a 2013 bill introduced by Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.) and would allow states to decide how to regulate marijuana.

How anyone in their right mind, can possibly say that marijuana is just as dangerous as LSD and heroin! Putting it in a severe category, is beyond me! Ive seen first hand the effects of crack cocain and heroin! And theres no comparison! These people need to give their head a shake!!

It's shocking that this is allowed to be the agenda at such a high level with the access to information we have today.

It's classified as a schedule 1 drug because the big pharma mafia wants it that way. They will lose billions of dollars when it does become legal in the U.S. They are doing everything possible to keep it illegal for as long as possible, but in the not to distant future it will be legalized.

I vote for you!

It's truly amazing that a government can ignore all the blatant facts of the healing properties of marijuana... The lives it would be able to change, the pain it would be able to ease. I used to see the effects of drugs like heroin on a daily basis, living in alphabet city in New York's lower east side - and to equate the 2 drugs on any level is just plain crazy. Time to "keep throwing that shade!"

More proof that our government is: 1. stupid. 2. that they're in someone's deep pockets. To keep marijuana in Schedule I, is flat out ridiculous. How can it possibly be compared to drugs like heroin, meth and LSD?! It's not chemically based, it's natural - it does not cause hallucinations. It's non-addictive... But I'm preaching to the choir here, aren't I? sigh
