  • Towards the end of the nineteenth century, organizations that militated for banning substances considered taboo in American society make their voice heard increasingly loud. Formed largely by members of Protestant and Neo-Protestant cults, these organizations have advocated for the prohibition of alcohol but also of cannabis. The Puritan philosophy of these organizations contradicts the fashion of characteristic opioms circles of those times.

  • The first attempts to regulate opioid use, but also cannabis. Their consumption will be limited to the medical one, and in order to buy the necessary substance you need a prescription from a doctor. The US legislature wanted a gradual withdrawal from American cannabis society by gradually limiting the legal dose to the population. The possession of cannabis would also be designated as illegal.

  • Under the International Opium Convention of 1925, the decision, supported by the US State, to ban the export of Indian hemp to the United States was taken. In 1930 the first American brochures and films appeared on the dangers of this plant.

  • In 1937, the "Marijuana Tax Act" was issued in the US. It illegalizes the transport and possession of cannabis, apart from the entrepreneurs who cultivated the plant for medicinal or industrial purposes and who had to pay an annual fee in this respect. The Marijuana Tax Act was suspended after hostilities between the US and Japan in 1942, when the plant proved to be necessary for American warfare.

  • In the 1950s, the first US criminal law to punish possession of cannabis with 2 to 10 years imprisonment and a fine of up to $ 20,000.
