Dana White indicates GGG-Canelo fight will happensteemCreated with Sketch.

Canelo Alvarez might be on the verge of a one-year suspension after twice testing positive for a banned substance. At the very least, that's the conclusion the Nevada State Athletic Commission came to recently.

Whether this means that Canelo's fight against Gennady Golovkin (GGG) set for May 5th will go on as planned remains to be seen.

If we were to ask UFC head man Dana White, it seems that he believes the almighty dollar will play the biggest role here.

"Yeah, I think it will. There's too much money involved," White said when asked if the fight will go on as planned, via TMZ Sports.

There's definitely going to be a lot of hoops to jump through on this one. In fact, the NSAC regulations make it clear that Alvarez's suspension can't be shortened from one year to six months unless he admits to using the banned substance in question.

"If an unarmed combatant … in this state promptly admits to an anti-doping violation when the only reliable evidence of the anti-doping violation is his or her admission, the commission may reduce, by not more than 50 percent, the period of ineligibility," the regulations say, via the Los Angeles Times.
It's not yet known whether a final determination will be made by the time the fight is expected to take place in just over a month. Even if it is shortened to six months, that would postpone the year's most-anticipated boxing match.

The event is scheduled to be held at the Las Vegas T-Mobile Arena in May. As White notes, there simply might be too much money on the line here.

The first fight between these two this past September resulted in a draw and was a major economic boon for both the Las Vegas region as well as the boxing community.

Based on the popularity of these two fighters, it seems obvious that the NSAC might want to hold off on handing down the suspension. Alvarez comes in No. 4 on the SNIPdaily Boxing Top 100 for the year with GGG finding himself No. 6.

We all know name recognition plays a role in pay-per-view totals. These two have that. And given that their first fight didn't accomplish a darn thing, we're hoping to see them go up against one another as planned in May.
