NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - People who eat dinner before 9 pm are less likely to develop breast cancer and prostate cancer, according to a recent Spanish study.

The study was carried out by researchers at the Barcelona Institute of World Health in Spain, and published their findings in the latest issue of the International Journal of Cancer.

To detect the relationship between the timing of the dinner meal and the risk of cancer, the team monitored dietary habits for 621 prostate cancer patients and more than 12,000 breast cancer patients.

The dietary habits of the participants were also compared to other healthy people of both sexes.

The researchers found that eating dinner early in the night, and before adequate sleep, is associated with a lower risk of cancer of the breast and prostate.

Compared to individuals who sleep immediately after dinner, those who sleep after two hours or more of the meal have a 20% lower risk of prostate cancer and prostate cancer.

The researchers also noted that there is a similar protection for people who eat dinner before 9 pm, compared to those who eat the meal after 10 pm.

"The findings confirm the importance of assessing the body's biological clock, its relation to diet and the risk of cancer, and the need to prepare nutritional recommendations for cancer prevention," said Dr. Manolis Kogevinas, head of the research team. "It is not just about the type and quantity of food, "He said.

"The results of the study have important implications, especially in cultures such as those in southern Europe, where people tend to have dinner late at night," he said.

According to the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer, breast cancer is the most common type of tumor among women worldwide, and in the Middle East in particular. About 1.4 million new cases are diagnosed every year, killing more than 450,000 women Annually around the world.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that prostate cancer is the most common non-dermatologic type of cancer among men, and that men aged 50 years or older are at higher risk.
