Ontario 20% hike to minimum wage for Jan 2018

That is right from $11.60 TO $14. Then $15 come Jan 2019.

I am sure the few Tim Hortons store response to the minimum wage increase in the news have stirred up a lot of conversations. For those that don't know benefits were reduced and paid breaks are gone after the minimum wage increase.

I was told "Why you don't want people to earn a living wage?" when I express my displeasure about the minimum wage hike.

Well here are the reasoning to my position on this matter, other than the normal job loss argument.

  1. If you zoom out and look at the big picture, the problem is not low wage but increasing prices. The hike may seem good till tax time and prices increase catches up. Any gain (if any) in purchasing power would disappear very quickly.
  2. Minimum wage is like Chemotherapy, it will hurt good cells while killing bad cells. A minimum wage hike creates a trickle up effect putting upward pressure on all wages and price level. This will hurt every one in Ontario but more on the retired and welfare recipients. In the same way a "Market Value" property tax hurt all the retired home owners in a "property boom" city and many had to sell and move away.
